Hypertourism

Definition: When too many people visit a place for a holiday, making it less enjoyable and difficult for the people who live there.

For example: "Many people have found jobs in tourism, but the beautiful parts of Zanzibar are having problems because of hypertourism. Too many tourists are visiting, which is bad for the small, clean sand islands where people watch marine animals and go diving." [14 February 2024]

How to use this word in real life: "Hypertourism" is a word you can use to talk about places that are too crowded with tourists. Here are some examples:

  • "The beaches are not as nice as they used to be because of hypertourism."
